with a snack!

The Basics: Color Mixing 101

Before you start this edible art project, let’s talk about the mystery behind colors. You know, understanding how colors work together is like learning a secret recipe—they combine in surprising and powerful ways!

Just like a chef carefully selects ingredients to create the perfect dish, artists mix colors to create new and exciting hues. And just like superheroes each have their own strengths, colors work together to create something powerful. All colors can be made from just five basic ingredients: red, yellow, blue, black, and white.

That’s right! Every shade, tint, and hue start with just these colorful players. Now that's amazing!

Colors work together to create depth, vibrancy, and balance in artwork, making every creation more dynamic and expressive. Check out this fun article!

Think of them as your amazing superhero team

  • RedThe fiery, bold leader.

  • YellowThe cheerful, sunny optimist.

  • BlueThe calm, cool, and collected thinker.

  • BlackThe deep, mysterious one who adds depth.

  • WhiteThe bright and pure highlight maker.

With just these colors, you can mix up any color in the in the world.

The Math of Mixing Colors…Yes, Fractions Are Delicious!

Mixing colors isn’t just art—it’s art and math integration! Check this out... Basic Color Theory For Kids. When we mix colors, we’re learning about fractions. For example:

  • Red + Yellow = Orange (1/2 red + 1/2 yellow)
  • Blue + Yellow = Green (1/2 blue + 1/2 yellow)
  • Red + Blue = Purple (1/2 red + 1/2 blue)
  • White + Any Color = A Lighter Tint
    (1/3 color + 2/3 white = a pretty pastel!)
  • Black + Any Color = A Darker Shade
    (3/4 color + 1/4 black = you'll get a deep,
    moody color!)

See? Fractions aren’t so bad when you realize they’re the key to mixing the perfect colors—and they taste even better when they end in cookies!

Professional artists and designers and cartoonists rely on math. They use precise ratios and fractions
when creating balanced compositions, mixing paint colors, or designing layouts.

Artists use precise proportions to create harmonious color palettes, for example when you mix 1/2 red and
1/2 yellow frosting to make orange, you're learning fractions with colors. The same goes tints—if you mix
2/3 white with 1/3 blue, you get a pastel blue.

It’s proof that math isn’t just for textbooks; it’s for snacks too!

Making the Cookie Color Wheel

Now, let’s put our newfound knowledge into action by creating a cookie color wheel! Here’s what you need:

  • Sugar cookies (store-bought or homemade—it’s your homeschool, after all!)
  • White frosting
  • Food coloring (red, yellow, blue, black, and white)
  • Small bowls for mixing
  • A butter knife or spoon for spreading
  • A piping bag or plastic sandwich bag for decorating

Step 1: Start with Primary Colors

Frost three cookies with red, yellow, and blue. These are called primary colors because they cannot be created by mixing other colors, but they can be combined to make all the other colors on the wheel!

Step 2: Mix Up the Secondary Colors

Now, take your red and yellow frosting and mix them together in a bowl to get orange. Do the same with blue and yellow to get green, and blue and red to get purple. Frost three more cookies with these new colors.

Step 3: Get Creative with Tints and Shades

Lighten up some frosting by adding white (for pastels) and darken some by adding a tiny bit of black. Frost more cookies with these new shades to show the full range of colors!

Step 4: DIY Cookie Decorating:
Add Some Funny Cartoon CookieFaces

This is the best part! Use black frosting or edible markers to draw silly, expressive cartoon faces on each cookie. Think about how colors match emotions:

  • Red Cookie – A big open mouth for excitement!
  • Yellow Cookie – A goofy smile for happiness!
  • Blue Cookie – A sleepy or sad face.
  • Orange Cookie – A mischievous smirk.
  • Green Cookie – A surprised face.
  • Purple Cookie – A mysterious, raised eyebrow.
  • Dark Colors – Brooding, moody expressions.
  • Pastels – Soft, sweet smiles.

Encourage kids to talk about what their cookie faces are feeling and why. Have them look in a mirror and mimic the expressions on their cookies—does a wide, open-mouthed smile make them feel excited like the red cookie? Or does a droopy, half-closed gaze resemble the sleepy blue cookie?

Connecting their own experiences to the expressions they create can help them better understand emotions and how colors can represent feelings in art. Ask guiding questions like, "How does this color make you feel?" or "What kind of personality do you think this cookie has?" This can help kids connect emotions with colors and expressions while sparking creativity in their storytelling.

Discussing these expressions can help kids connect colors with emotions
This will help your children understand how to express feelings in fun and creative ways!

The Bigger Lesson: God’s Creativity in Us

Just like colors blend to create something new and beautiful, God created us all uniquely, but with the ability to work together. Think about a choir—each singer has a different voice, yet when they sing in harmony, they create something greater than any one voice alone.

I’m sure that your homeschool family works the same way—one child may be great at math, another at storytelling, and you help guide the way. In my own homeschooling experience, my older grandson is a natural problem solver, while my younger one loves spinning imaginative stories.

God designed us to complement one another, just as He designed colors to mix and create new beauty. He gives
each of us different gifts, and when we come together, we make the world more vibrant and full of life!

So, whether you’re mixing colors, drawing cartoons, or just eating cookies with your kids, remember creativity
is a gift from God, and He’s given it to you to share and enjoy!

Final Thoughts

This cookie color wheel isn’t just a fun way to learn—it’s a full STEAM Activity For Kids (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) that’s wrapped in sugar and silliness!

Bonus Challenge: Take a picture of your color wheel cookies and try drawing them as cartoon characters before eating them. Then, take a moment to explain why you chose certain colors for your characters. Do warm colors make your character seem energetic? Does a cool color give it a calm or sleepy feeling? Discussing the amazing, and unusual color choices your child makes can add another layer of creativity and learning to this fun artistic activity!
