Christian Homeschool and Cartoons

Can we chat for a second? Just you and me—heart to heart. No pressure, no Pinterest-perfect expectations. Just two Jesus-loving Christian homeschoolers doing our best to raise some world-changers in between spelling tests, snack times, and the occasional meltdown over missing scissors. (Been there. Still there.)

There’s something I need to tell you—something I’ve seen repeatedly in my years of teaching thousands of kids how to draw cartoons, homeschooling, and drawing silly things for a living. Art is everywhere and your kids need it. Not as a “bonus activity.” Not as a “when we have time” thing. But as a key part of their growth, their learning, and even their Christian faith.

Let me introduce myself properly

My name is Debi Hamuka-Falkenham and I’m a homeschooling Mema to two amazing grandsons, ages 15 and 8. I’ve been homeschooling them for the past five years, and we currently use BJU.

Before that, I spent over 25 years as a professional cartoonist and creative writer, giving cartooning workshops to thousands of kids across all kinds of schools, churches, various libraries, homeschool groups and community programs.

And yes—I’m still at it today!
I continue to work as an active cartoonist, sharing my unigue style, my cartoon characters, my creativity, and most of all my odd sense of humor.

Kids light up when they realize art is already part of their lives.

Not just in museums. Not just in fancy sketchbooks. But right here, right now, in your home, your fridge, your kids' backpacks, their lunchboxes, their Bibles, and their favorite pajamas. And a lot of that art? Cartoons.

Cartoons are all around your kids—and they’ve been a part of your own life too, whether it was Bugs Bunny or VeggieTales. Cartoons aren’t just silly pictures. They are powerful tools that teach, inspire, entertain, and help ideas stick. And when you start to point them out in your home, your homeschool, and even your faith journey—you’ll realize how often they’re helping shape how your kids think, learn, and feel.

Art Is Already in Your Home (Yes, Yours!)

Look around your house for a second. No judgment on the towering laundry pile that's officially been promoted to a landmark or that mystery slime lurking suspiciously near the couch—hey, even Noah had cleanup duty after all those animals, right? We're keeping it real here. This is the homeschool life we have: messy, funny, and wonderfully unpredictable.

What do you see around your house?

  • A juice box with a smiling apple?

  • Bandages with cute kittens?

  • A kids’ Bible filled with colorful animals?

  • Puppies on pajamas saying "Resting in Jesus"?

  • A silly lamb tote bag that says, "Ewe are loved!"?

That’s all art. And more often than not, it’s cartoons—
playful, funny, engaging art that grabs attention and tells a story, like my character Midge The Angel. Here’s the part your kids and maybe even you may not realize:

Everything you see, use, wear, ride in, or play with was once a drawing.

Before that toy existed. It was a sketch. Before that favorite shirt got printed. Someone designed it. Even your house? Your car? Your shoes? Your homeschool curriculum covers? All started with an artist’s imagination. And once your children begin to see that? They start to believe they can be a part of it, too.

They begin to understand that art isn’t just a class—it’s how the world is built.
And that they can build things too.

What This Means for Your Homeschool

Oh, my friend…it means everything! When you bring art—especially cartoons—into your homeschool day, you're not just "doing art class." You're opening up joyful, creative ways to teach and connect, filling your days with laughter, imagination, and wonderful surprises.

  • Cartoons can help your kids:

  • Visualize tricky concepts

  • Retain lessons with laughter

  • Connect Bible truths to real life

  • See their own ideas as valuable

  • Feel empowered to explore, imagine, and express what they’re learning

Want to help your child remember a Bible verse?
Let them turn it into a comic. Working on fractions? Draw a pizza and label the slices. Exploring the story of Moses? Sketch him parting spaghetti noodles in the Red Sea of your dinner plate. It’s silly. It’s creative. And you know what? It works.

When your homeschool starts to feel heavy or rigid, cartoons can breathe new life into the lesson. When kids laugh while learning, they remember. When they draw what they believe, they internalize it. When they create, they connect... and that's a good thing.

God Is the First Artist

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1

The very first verse in the Bible tells us God created. Not just function—but beauty. He didn’t need to make zebras with stripes or jellyfish that glow or sunsets that change color—but He did. Because He’s an artist.

And then He made your children—in His image. That means your kids were made to create.

They were made to notice color, shape, movement, and story. They were made to reflect the beauty and brilliance of the God who formed them. So, when your child draws Jonah inside the belly of a jellybean, or the Fruits of the Spirit as ninja bananas? That’s more than play—that’s theology in action.

Just like Jesus used stories (parables) to teach, your kids can use pictures. They can draw what they believe. They can laugh and learn and lean into God’s Word in a way that sticks with them. Art isn’t fluff—it’s part of how your kids were wired to worship.

Before You Go, A Little Encouragement for Your Christian Homeschool Journey

You my friend are doing holy work. Even when the math is messy. Even when the baby is teething. Even when nobody knows where the glue sticks went (again). You are showing up. You’re pouring out. And you are raising kids to love learning and love the Lord.

When you add creativity to your homeschool, you’re not just adding color, you are giving your children the permission to imagine, the confidence to create, the joy in the journey and  a lifelong lens for seeing God’s beauty  in the world around them

You are also reminding them that the God who made galaxies and laughter and waterfalls and music also made them—and He delights in their doodles, their questions, their messy comic strips, and their sparkly stick figures.

So grab the crayons, crack open your Bible, and print out the free workbook. And if one day your child draws Noah’s Ark with a couple of giraffes wearing sunglasses and hippos in Hawaiian shirts? Just nod and say,
"Well, looks like somebody’s ready for the cruise!”

I’ll be here cheering you on—with my cow-themed pencil cup, a few fresh markers,
the thrice reheated cup of coffee and a whole lot of grace.

With giggles and love,
Debi (aka: Mema the Cowtoonist)
Helping your kids see the art in their world—and the Creator who put it there.
