God's Gift of Giggles

Christian Homeschooling Humor
You know those homeschool days when everything runs smoothly? The kids wake up eager to learn, Bible study is full of deep discussions, everyone finds their pencils (for once), and by lunchtime, you feel like you’ve got this Christian homeschooling thing figured out? Yeah… those days are rare. Most of the time, homeschooling in my house looks like this:
- My grandsons turning every subject into a full-blown comedy sketch.
- The math book vanishing into The Great Homeschool Black Hole.
- The six dogs losing their minds over the mailman (again).
- The cat staring at us like she’s judging our entire existence.
- And the three fish just floating there, completely unimpressed with our chaos.
- And right when I’m about to wave the white flag, one of my grandsons cracks a joke, the other one falls out of his chair on purpose, and suddenly, we’re all laughing until we can’t breathe.
That, my friend, is God’s beautiful gift of laughter in action.
And do you know what keeps us sane on these crazy, chaotic homeschool days? Cartoons. Yes, good old-fashioned cartoons—one of the best secret learning tools. It’s truly joyful learning and making kids happy while they’re learning is a definite plus.
So, grab a cup of coffee (which if you’re anything like me you probably reheated it at least twice by now), and let’s talk about how laughter, cartoons, and creativity can transform your homeschool—because I promise you, they make all the difference!
Humor In Education
As a professional cartoonist, I've spent over 25 years teaching kids how to draw cartoons, spark their boundless creativity, and cleverly sneak in some academics. Trust me, kids have no idea they're learning when they're having fun. Now for the last five years as a homeschooling grandma (aka: Mema), I’ve had, and have, the joy of homeschooling my two grandsons, ages 15 and 8. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:
Homeschooling is so much better with laughter.
Why just learn about gravity when you can reenact it with a slow-motion, exaggerated fall? Why just spell words when you can say them in the most ridiculous accents possible? Honestly, they’re not wrong. Spelling words are so much funnier with an English accent.
So, this is my homeschool life. It’s loud. It’s chaotic. It’s fun. And you know what? I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Because somehow, in the middle of all this chaos, we’re learning through laughter, giggling, and growing in faith together.
My biggest homeschool win is watching humor turn boring lessons into awesome adventures thru the use of cartoons.—Nothing beats laughing, happy kids to remind me why I love what I do! Here's more about laughter in homeschool.
Cartoons: The Ultimate Learning Tool
Imagine trying to explain a complex concept like forgiveness or gravity through text alone. Now, picture a cartoon that encapsulates the idea in a simple, humorous, and relatable way. Which do you think kids will remember? I bet on the cartoons every time. Jesus knew the power of storytelling, often teaching in parables. Cartoons are our modern-day parables—they simplify big concepts, making them relatable and memorable. They are not just drawings; they are visual stories that engage young minds.
In my 25-plus years of teaching, I’ve learned that kids absorb more when they’re having fun. You can either spend 20 minutes explaining a concept with charts and long explanations or show them a funny cartoon that makes the same point in seconds. Suddenly, they get it! It’s like a light bulb goes off, and what was once difficult to grasp becomes clear as day.
Engaging Difficult Learners
What If Your Kid Hates Academics? Some kids just do not like school. I mean, really do not like it. Not just the “I’d rather be playing video games” kind of dislike—but the “I’d rather wrestle a grumpy alligator.
Maybe you’ve got:
- A reluctant reader who would rather eat Brussels sprouts than open a book.
- A math-hater who suddenly forgets how to count the second a word problem appears.
- A history-loather who thinks anything that happened before YouTube is “boring.”
Sound familiar?
If so, cartoons might just be your new best friend. Does history feel like a snooze fest to your kid. Instead of memorizing dates and names (that they will immediately forget), I am a strong believer in visual storytelling in education.
Why not try this? Have your kids try this creative cartoon project and turn a historical event into a comic strip.
“What if Paul Revere had a cellphone?”
“What if he rode a motorcycle?
Suddenly, history isn’t boring—it’s hilarious and memorable... and here's why! Cartoons make learning feel like fun instead of work for kids. They help them visualize difficult concepts, and they add humor and fun and a new perspective to subjects that feel overwhelming.
Alright, let’s jump right in and unpack this together.
Struggling to explain patience?
Watch a Superbook episode where a Bible hero learns to trust God’s timing.
Teaching fractions?
Draw a funny comic strip of a pizza arguing over which half is bigger.
History lesson feeling like a snooze-fest?
Bring historical figures to life. Imagine George Washington in a superhero cape!
Want to teach emotions?
Show a cartoon character in various expressions, in an exaggerated, humorous way that kids recognize.
And let’s be real… Have you ever noticed that kids can somehow remember every funny line from their favorite cartoons—but not where they left their shoes? That’s the power of storytelling.
Cartoons Are Pure Homeschool Gold
When kids laugh, they’re not just having fun—they’re engaged, fully present, and ready to absorb what they’re learning.
And let’s face it—homeschooling is just more fun when there’s laughter involved!
So, the next time your homeschool day starts to feel a little too serious… grab a pencil, sketch out a silly cartoon, or watch a faith-filled animated show together.
Because learning should bring joy—and laughter is one of God’s greatest gifts!
Integrating cartoons in Christian homeschool is one of the easiest ways to engage kids who struggle with traditional learning. Because let’s be honest—some kids just need learning to feel fun. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
The Healing Power of Laughter
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22
Science backs up this biblical wisdom, showing that laughter can reduce stress and increase memory retention. In our homeschool, laughter is just as important as any textbook. When the kids laugh, they’re more engaged, more present, and more receptive to learning. And as a bonus, they’re happier, too.
